An update from the Boxford PTO

Dear Boxford Elementary School Community:

On March 1, 2017 the Boxford PTO (“PTO”) issued a statement in notification of financial irregularities in the bank account of the PTO.  We provided an update on June 14, 2017. At this time we are able to provide you with the results of the investigation and subsequent prosecution.

The PTO received full restitution and a statement of apology from the defendant.  The judge issued a verdict of “Continued Without a Finding” along with 18 months of probation and fifty hours of community service.

The PTO would like to assure the community that we have worked diligently to review our processes and procedure in an effort to prevent future incidents.  This is an ongoing process as we continually evaluate risks to the organization.

As we put this matter behind us, we are thankful to the school community who has stood by us during these difficult times.  We are pleased to announce that we ended our fiscal year ahead of our goals and will be increasing the funds available for Curriculum Enrichment during the 2017-2018 school year.  Looking to the year ahead, keep an eye out for some new initiatives as well as those which have become a tradition.  Thank you again for your continued support.

Sincerely,

The Boxford PTO Board

Notice from the Boxford PTO:
Dear Boxford Elementary School Community:

On March 1, 2017 the Boxford PTO (“PTO”) issued a statement in notification of financial irregularities in the bank account of the PTO.  The PTO has been working with the Boxford Police Department and the Office of the District Attorney as the investigation progressed.

An audit was performed of the PTO bank accounts and identified a misappropriation and loss of over $11,000.  The misappropriation was based on transactions that could not be connected to official PTO business. This information was provided to the Boxford Police Department, who in turn provided it to the District Attorney’s Office.  In mid-April criminal charges were filed.

A recent article in the Salem Evening News has outlined the charges and specifics of this case.

The PTO works hard on behalf of students and teachers, and in no way takes for granted the generosity of the parent community or community sponsors. As stewards of the community’s money the PTO Board was surprised, angered and very disappointed by the alleged actions of a previous board member. The PTO takes these alleged actions very seriously and would like to reassure our community that it is doing everything possible to guarantee the restitution of funds stolen and prevent this activity from occurring again.

The PTO has completed a comprehensive review of its financial procedures and has put into place new procedures ensuring full transparency and accountability for all funds collected on its behalf.

Since the funds in question belong to the Boxford Elementary School Community, the PTO is providing a community comment period through midnight on Sunday, June 25th.  The PTO has established an email account specifically for this purpose BoxfordPTOprivate@gmail.com. Please contact us with your thoughts so that the PTO Board may take them into consideration when writing a victim impact statement to be heard by the court and as a recommendation for sentencing to the Office of the District Attorney. Any comments will be kept private and anonymous outside of the PTO Board and will not be cited, quoted or attributed to by name. The matter is next scheduled for disposition on June 30, 2017.  Regardless of our recommendation, any legal decision will ultimately remain with the judge in the case.

During this difficult time, we remain committed to our mission:  to enhance the education of elementary students by offering programs and materials that support learning and a positive sense of community.  The PTO Board looks forward to working together with its members and the Boxford community to restore confidence and trust in our organization and allow the PTO the opportunity to move forward in support of the students.

Sincerely,

The Boxford PTO Board

Notice from the Boxford PTO:
Dear Boxford Elementary School Community:

We are writing to inform you of recently discovered financial irregularities in the Boxford PTO (“PTO”) bank account. As stewards of the organization’s funds, our board takes its fiduciary responsibility very seriously. In the interest of transparency to our supporters please note the following:

In mid-February, the PTO received a call from the fraud department of the Institution for Savings (“IFS”) regarding the PTO account. A “freeze” was immediately placed on the account, and the Boxford Police Department became involved. The PTO is fully cooperating with the police investigation. Because of the ongoing investigation, the PTO Board is not at liberty to discuss details. Once more facts are known and we have approval from the police and our attorneys, we will provide an update.

We hope that you will continue to support our efforts. The PTO works very hard to provide programs, supplemental materials and experiences that enrich and complement the tremendous education our children receive at the Cole and Spofford Pond Elementary Schools.

Sincerely,

The Boxford PTO Board
